RESUMO

The history of sex research demonstrates an ongoing coexistence of multiple, conflicting meanings of sex. This history raises questions for scientists about the deployment of a research variable that lacks precision. Cross-disciplinary collaboration between scientists and science and technology studies (STS) scholars offers a way to find solutions to this problem.

Michael Przybylski (1948-2023) was a Polymer Chemist by training and devoted nearly his entire scientific life, almost 50 years, to mass spectrometry and its biomedical applications. After earning his PhD in Chemistry, there followed a Postdoc stay at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD, USA, and his habilitation at the University of Mainz, Germany. Soon thereafter, Michael Przybylski took the Chair for Analytical Chemistry at the University of Konstanz, Germany, where he served as Director of the Analytical Chemistry and Biopolymer Structure Analysis Laboratory. As Emeritus Michael Przybylski moved the Steinbeis Centre for Biopolymer Analytics and Biomedical Mass Spectrometry to Rüsselsheim, Germany. Michael Przybylski's research was from the beginning interdisciplinary-oriented and in many ways groundbreaking: leading to over 400 scientific papers published in internationally renowned journals and to about 25 patents. Michael Przybylski gave approximately 150 invited lectures and was awarded several scientific prizes. In recognition of his outstanding achievements and fruitful collaboration, he received the Doctorate of honor from the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, Romania. Michael Przybylski was the Director of the by him founded "Biopolymer Analytics and Biomedical Mass Spectrometry" research center until his sudden and unexpected death.

James S. Jackson (1944-2020) is remembered as a groundbreaking social psychologist whose career contributions in scholarship, research, and service were fundamental to the field of psychology. This article briefly outlines his career-long work and contributions. A strong believer in interdisciplinary work, his research spanned other related social science disciplines (e.g., sociology, political science), as well as health and social welfare professions (public health, social work, medicine). As the founding director of the Program for Research on Black Americans at the Institute for Social Research, James Jackson initiated and led a long-standing program with a dual focus on research and training and mentoring doctoral students, postdoctoral scholars, and early career scientists. Jackson's efforts in the development of several nationally representative surveys of the Black population in the United States (e.g., National Survey of Black Americans, National Survey of American Life) revolutionized research focusing on the lives of Black Americans. James Jackson's international influence and reputation included numerous prestigious positions within national science organizations and honors and awards for his scientific contributions. Among James S. Jackson's most enduring legacies is the vast network of current scientists, researchers, and academics who were trained under his direction and leadership. It is a great honor to be invited to write a reflections article on my scientific journey and lifelong bile acid research for the Journal of Biological Chemistry, in which I am proud to have published 24 articles. I have also published 21 articles in the Journal of Lipid Research, another journal of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I begin my reflections from my early education in Taiwan, my coming to America for graduate study, and continue with my postdoctoral training in cytochrome P450 research, and my lifelong bile acid research career at Northeast Ohio Medical University. I have witnessed and helped in the transformation of this rural not so visible medical school to a well-funded leader in liver research. Writing this reflections article on my long and rewarding journey in bile acid research brings back many good memories. I am proud of my scientific contributions and attribute my academic success to hard work, perseverance, good mentoring, and networking. I hope these reflections of my academic career would help inspire young investigators to pursue an academic career in biochemistry and metabolic diseases.

Much has been written on Claude Bernard as a relentless promoter of the experimental method in physiology. Although the paper will touch Bernard's experimental intuitions and his experimental practice as well, its focus is slightly different. It will address the laboratory, that is, the space in which experimentation in the life sciences takes place, and it will analyze the scattered remarks that Bernard made on the topic both in his books and in his posthumously published writings. The paper is divided into four parts. The introduction briefly sketches the coming into being of the physiological laboratory in the first half of the nineteenth century. The second section will give an overview of Claude Bernard's own itinerary in physiology and his personal laboratory experience. The third part of the paper will have a look at the image of the laboratory that Claude depicted in his Introduction to Experimental Medicine. In the subsequent section and by contrast, the image of the laboratory will come into focus as it can be reconstructed from Bernard's notebook that he kept between 1850 and 1860, the Cahier rouge. Finally, the fifth part of the paper will spotlight Claude Bernard's comparison of the sciences and the arts and their respective practices. A brief concluding statement tries to summarize Bernard's epistemological position toward experimentally practiced science.

This paper examines anesthesiologist Henry K. Beecher's funding relationship with pharmaceutical manufacturer Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Beecher is a familiar figure to both medical ethicists and historians of medicine for his role in the bioethics revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. In particular, his 1966 article "Ethics and Clinical Research" is widely considered a turning point in the post-World War II debate about informed consent. We argue that Beecher's scientific interests should be understood in the context of his funding relationship with Mallinckrodt and that this relationship shaped the direction of his work in important ways. We also argue that Beecher's views on research ethics reflected his assumption that collaboration with industry was a normal part of how academic science is conducted. In the conclusion of the paper we suggest that Beecher's failure to consider his relationship with Mallinckrodt as worthy of ethical deliberation has important lessons for academic researchers who collaborate with industry today.

The adrenal is a small, anatomically unimposing structure that escaped scientific notice until 1564 and whose existence was doubted by many until the 18th century. Adrenal functions were inferred from the adrenal insufficiency syndrome described by Addison and from the obesity and virilization that accompanied many adrenal malignancies, but early physiologists sometimes confused the roles of the cortex and medulla. Medullary epinephrine was the first hormone to be isolated (in 1901), and numerous cortical steroids were isolated between 1930 and 1949. The treatment of arthritis, Addison's disease, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) with cortisone in the 1950s revolutionized clinical endocrinology and steroid research. Cases of CAH had been reported in the 19th century, but a defect in 21-hydroxylation in CAH was not identified until 1957. Other forms of CAH, including deficiencies of 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 11ß-hydroxylase, and 17α-hydroxylase were defined hormonally in the 1960s. Cytochrome P450 enzymes were described in 1962-1964, and steroid 21-hydroxylation was the first biosynthetic activity associated with a P450. Understanding of the genetic and biochemical bases of these disorders advanced rapidly from 1984 to 2004. The cloning of genes for steroidogenic enzymes and related factors revealed many mutations causing known diseases and facilitated the discovery of new disorders. Genetics and cell biology have replaced steroid chemistry as the key disciplines for understanding and teaching steroidogenesis and its disorders.

Perhaps the most unexpected development in pediatric endocrinology in the past 50 years has been the recognition of obesity as an endocrine/metabolic disorder rather than a life choice or moral failing. The history of obesity research is disjointed, having followed two separate paths in the 20th century, based on two independent yet overlapping paradigms. Proponents of the "Energy Storage" hypothesis point to data implicating monogenetic disorders, the ventromedial hypothalamus, insulin, cortisol, and the adipocyte itself in the pathogenesis of obesity. Alternatively, proponents of the "Energy Balance" hypothesis point to data implicating increased caloric intake, decreased caloric expenditure, gastrointestinal hormones, and microbiome changes as being critical for obesity. These two separate lines of research merged somewhat with the discovery of leptin in 1994, as leptin established a major hormonal role in weight control. Leptin has explained some of the dichotomy and has proved essential in understanding the importance of developmental programming and epigenetics. However, the mystery of leptin resistance remains unsolved. Despite all our collective knowledge, we appear no closer in solving the obesity puzzle today than we were 50 years ago.

Laszlo Nagy has been on the Editorial Board of FEBS Open Bio since the journal's inception and is a passionate supporter of FEBS Press and other society journals. Currently, he is also an editor of FEBS Letters and The Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI). He studied medicine at the University Medical School of Debrecen in Hungary, where he graduated with an M.D. and later Ph.D., and then moved to the United States to conduct postdoctoral research at the University of Texas-Houston and subsequently the Salk Institute in San Diego. Laszlo is a Professor of Medicine and Biological Chemistry at John Hopkins School of Medicine, where he is Co-Director of the Institute for Fundamental Biomedical Research and Associate Director of the Center for Metabolic Origins of Disease, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Debrecen. Formerly, he was a Professor and Founding Director of the Genomic Control of Metabolism Program at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. He is also a member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), Academia Europaea, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and The Henry Kunkel Society, and recipient of several awards, including the Boehringer Ingelheim Research Award, Cheryl Whitlock/Pathology Prize, a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship in Biomedical Sciences, and three Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholar Awards. In this fascinating interview, Laszlo Nagy shares the advice that changed his career trajectory, relates his views on scientific publishing, discusses new developments at The Johns Hopkins Center for Metabolic Origins of Disease, and outlines the prospects for future development of research and technology infrastructures in eastern Europe.
